In 1943 Elise Sontag is a typical fourteen-year-old from Iowa - until her father, a legal U.S. resident, is accused of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where Elise feels stripped of her own identity. The only thing that makes the camp bearable is fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles, who makes Elise believe that life will return to normal. But after the Sontag family is exchanged for American prisoners in Germany, Elise must discover if she has the will to rise above prejudice and hatred to reclaim her own destiny, or if she will disappear into the image others have cast upoin her.
